This teaching resource was developed by a K-12 science teacher in the American Physiological Society’s 2008 Frontiers in Physiology Program. For more information on this program, please visit www.frontiersinphys.org. The purpose of this activity is to increase the student’s inquiry and scientific process skills. During the activity, students work in teams to design and carry out experiments in order to determine the optimal concentrations of the primary ingredients in LB (Luria-Bertani) agar media. They will present their findings and compare such to “published” standard protocols. Finally, they will explore the career of a microbiologist. Students should have prior knowledge of basic solution chemistry. Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to identify essential nutrients and conditions for living things.
