This unit engages students while reading The Circuit, by Francisco Jimenez. There are a variety of activities, including use of free online resources. I usually pick and choose from the collection, and not assign all of them. Many can be used in Literature Circle format.

Reviewer Comments:

This resource is a link to a valuable website that provides teachers with a tool to engage students about current issues and develop critical thinking and literacy skills. Youngzine is a free website that delivers content about current events in an age appropriate manner. The website covers world news, science, technology, the arts, and much more. The site is interactive with opportunities for students to submit their own articles, to review articles on the site, and to play educational games and enter contests. In addition, teachers can register for a classroom code that allows individualized use of the site to meet classroom needs.
