Game

Description:

This online interactive game from math-play.com is modeled after the television game show "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" and provides high-quality graphics and sound that create an exciting game show atmosphere in your math class. I like to create a friendly competition between different hours (or sections) of my Algebra class to see who can earn the most money. The winning class earns bragging rights as well as "half off" of their homework assignment. To increase student engagement and accountability, I have students work in pairs or trios to answer questions. After a question from the game is posed, I give students adequate time to work and discuss the equation before choosing a team at random. Since teams never know when they will be chosen, all students stay engaged in the activity. Plus, they want to win that half off homework night! :-)

Understand the absolute value of a rational number as its distance from 0 on the number line; interpret absolute value as magnitude for a positive or negative quantity in a real-world situation.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.NS.A.1c: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p - q = p + (-q). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
