This activity introduces the creation of afterimages formed from a prolonged stimulation of the eye’s retina. A flashlight, paper, and tape are used to produce afterimages viewed on one’s hands and a more distant wall. The site provides an explanation of what happens, describes extensions to observations of the moon, and also contains information about night vision. Materials needed and assembly instructions are also given. This activity is part of Exploratorium's Science Snacks series.
