Reviewer Comments:

This is a comprehensive, material-rich interdisciplinary unit that revolves around the novel Seeking the Nightingale, a work of historical fiction set in medieval Japan. Students engage in WebQuests to research significant historical and cultural aspects of Japan and then, in teams, create presentations that demonstrate the connection between a selected literary theme and their research. This is a truly student-centered project and the activities, worksheets, and directions reflect this emphasis. Each element of the unit is clearly explained and reinforced with graphic organizers to capture work. Highlights include reading guides, vocabulary activities, an essay topic for Socratic seminar, an expert jigsaw, and rubrics for individual and peer work. This is a model unit and could be used in middle or higher grades. A few links were inaccessible or not found at the time of this review.
