Description:

The cattails and live oak trees in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge help protect coastal Texas from storm surges. Texas is vulnerable to the storm surges that follow hurricanes from the Gulf of Mexico. Wetlands like the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge are able to absorb the excess water and powerful waves brought by hurricanes before they reach coastal cities like Corpus Christi or Galveston.
