This reading, part of a series about the future of energy, introduces students to the structure of the atom. Here students read about the parts of the atom and how the charged particles repel or attract one another. Students view diagrams that show the attractive and repulsive actions. Radioactive atoms and the particles emitted from unstable atoms are discussed. Information about blocking these three types of emitted particles is given. Students also read that the energy released from atoms creates nuclear energy. A link is provided to an interactive periodic table of the elements. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
