With this virtual manipulative, the student can explore the meaning of place value and grouping. Work can be done in bases from two to ten, and the number of decimal places displayed can be adjusted. Problems come in two types. Sort and group problems challenge the student to place units, longs, flats, and cubes into the appropriate place value columns on the work space. The other problem type asks the student to represent a number using the four varieties of blocks. When the blocks are grouped correctly to represent a number, the number is displayed. The student may clear the workspace to start over on a problem or click a button for a new challenge. Instructions for using the manipulative, information about bases and place value, and a link to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) grades 6-8 standard for algebra are included.
