Reviewer Comments:

This engaging activity combines learning about adaptations and a little science fiction, and is appropriate for middle through high school students. Inspired by Dougal Dixon’s book, After Man, and description of the Islands of Batavia, this activity asks students to design a bat that would be very well suited for the ecosystem based on the adaptations of different organisms already in the system. Although the contributor mainly focuses on bats, she acknowledges that this activity could easily be adapted to work for any variety of animal or plant species. Also, this write-up may lack polish, it is clear that the activity was designed by a practicing teacher and is classroom-tested. For example, the contributor cautions “a common way for naive students to approach the problem is just to add on rather than modify.” No formal assessment is included.
