Description:

Peat bogs also emit carbon as they are burned accidentally, or intentionally for industrial or agricultural development. Indonesia is home to some of the largest tropical peat bogs, which ignite very quickly and smoulder underground for weeks without attracting notice. In 1997, peat and forest fires in Indonesia contributed to 40 percent of the total global carbon emissions for the period. This amazing image shows the slow-burning forest and peat fires on the Indonesian island of Borneo in 2002. Individual fires are identified with red dots.
