Description:

This web page is an interactive physics simulation relating to static friction in a spinning cylinder. It simulates an old amusement park ride called "Gravitron". Riders lined the interior wall of a large cylinder that starts to spin. When the rotational speed is sufficient, the floor drops away and the riders stay "pinned" to the wall. A Frictional Force vs. Time graph is plotted simultaneously with the animation of the Gravitron, allowing users to see what happens to the static force of friction as the angular velocity decreases. This item is part of a collection of similar simulation-based activities developed for students of introductory physics.
