E-book, Table/Graph/Chart

Presents average earnings and the costs of various items during the Great Depression, during which Roll of Thunder is set. Students enter today's prices into a table, then make a budget using the average salary. This is meant to bring the period to life while making connections to the present, and to get high school students thinking about money management. This resource is part of the Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry collection.

Reviewer Comments:

This resource offers a chart providing the costs of basic items during the Depression, when Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry takes place, and asks students to research the cost of these items in present day. While the concept is excellent, the chart could include costs of more essentials - food, shoes, doctor visits, etc. Additional discussion and research would enhance learning by comparing and contrasting the information created using this chart.
