Description:

This simple FlashTM animation depicts development of the cardiogenic field in the trilaminar germ disc. It begins with a ventral view of a bilaminar disc with a transparent endoderm. Clicking causes the embryo to advance through the trilaminar stage showing mesenchymal cells invaginating though the primitive streak and spreading throughout the germ disc. Cardiogenic mesoderm cells are color coded red, other mesoderm cells are green. This allows users to see how the first cells to invaginate through the streak are specified to form the cardiogenic field and heart.
