Bell, Virginia Governor Mark Warner publicly apologized for Virginia's past involvement in eugenics. He said, "The eugenics movement was a shameful effort in which state government never should have been involved." The State of Virginia approved a roadside marker in memory of Carrie in her hometown of Charlottesville. The governors of California, Oregon, North Carolina, and South Carolina also issued apologies.
