During the formation of a daughter yeast cell, a small Ras-like GTPase acts as a morphogenetic coordinator and, as reported in two papers in this week's issue of Science [Drgonová (p. 277) and Qadota et al. (p. 279)], regulates beta(1arrow pointing right3)glucan synthase, the enzyme that makes the glycans of the cell walls. In his Perspective, Bussey discusses this function of Rho and the parallels to its functions in mammalian cells.
