Civics Curriculum

Introduction:
 

Have you ever wondered what life was like over 300 years ago? Well now it's your chance to find out! You are either a Puritan, Quaker or Indian family (groups assigned by teacher) living in early 18th century Colonial America. Your job is to find out what your life would be like during this time period. What is your role in society? What kinds of jobs and/or tasks are expected of you? What is going on in that time period that could affect your life? It is time to dive into the American time portal and have a learning adventure through interesting internet resources and a fun interactive program called Kidspiration.
 

The Task:
 

Students will be able to learn about colonial lifestyles in America among different social and religious groups while using technological resources and software to help enhance learning. Students will acquire enough information to make a thorough KWL chart about a certain lifestyle they have been assigned, as well as produce a poster that focuses on a specific idea that they find interesting to present to the class. To create this KWL chart, students will transfer the information they learned into a chart using Kidspiration software. They will also be asked to create a mental map to organize their information on their specific colonial lifestyle. They will not only learn about the colonial lifestyles, but also about technological resources such as the internet and Kidspiration.
 

The Process:
 

Starting out: Getting into groups

  1. The teacher will divide you in to groups of either Native Americans, Puritans, or Quakers during this Webquest.
2. Once you have received your role you have to get into a group with a member of the remaining groups. Each group will have at least one Native American, one Puritan, and one Quaker. You will also be handed a worksheet which you will fill out when you reach the activities presented in the Webquest. Webquest worksheet

3. You will be expected to help one another if a group member needs it. Also feel free to bounce ideas off of one another, they just might have the answer your looking for. And if your group members don't have the answer r if you need help the teacher is always there to guide you through this Webquest. 4. Go to Evaluation. Look at what is expected of you and what you will be graded on. 5. Make sure you have a folder to store all of your work.

Brainstorming: Gathering Ideas

  1. Here is a great web-site to show you how to use Kidspiration. (Kidspiration clip)
2. Log on to Kidspiration and create a KWL chart based on the group they have been given. Feel free to ask your teacher or groupmembers if you need help.(K stand for what you already KNOW, W stands for What you WANT to learn, and L stand for what you LEARNED and will be filled out at the end of the Webquest) 3. After you have completed the first two portions of your KWL chart talk with your group about what you wrote down and what they wrote down. ( Maybe they know something about your group that you did not know) 4. Come up with at least 10 things that you want to learn about your group. If you are having trouble your teacher could give you some exampes or hints to get you going. 5. Print out your KWL charts and leave room for the L portion because you will be filling that section in hand at the end of the Webquest.

Webquest

  1. You are going to use Internet resources to find out more information on your group and hopefully most of the K portion of your KWL chart.
2. To get to your Internet resources follow this Webquest Internet resources 3. Visit all of the sites provided for your group. Search for tips, facts, and any bit of information that could help you with your KWL chart. 4. Record at least 3 important pieces of information from each site. If you need help ask a group member or a teacher if no one in your group can help. 5. Take notes on the web-sites even if they are not part of your 3 important pieces of information. Creating a concept map with Kidspiration

  1. You will be joining the large group of everyone who has the same group as you. There will be 3 large groups left in the classroom, either Native Americans, Puritans, or Quakers.The teacher will be walking around answering questions and helping is you need any help or guidence. Again here is the clip on how to use Kidspiration. Kidspiration Clip
2. Compare your KWL chart with the group and other findings. 3. You will be making a concept map or otherwise known as a mind map with your group on Kidspiration. (Here are two websites what will help you understand what a concept map is (Website #1, Website #2) 4. You will be expected to show at least 10 links to your groups lives during Colonial America. Your concept map should show what you have learned and you should also fill the answers out on the L portion of your KWL charts. Check with a teacher when your halfway done to see if your going in the right direction. 5. Make sure your concept map organized and easy to understand. This more organized and easy to understand your concept map is the easier it will be for you to study later on. 6. Go to evaluations and make sure you followed all of the directions so that you do not loose any easy points. 7. Print out your concept maps.

Make a poster

  1. Split into smaller groups out of your larger groups. It is important that everyone in this group was in your other group. These are the three previous large groupings Native American, Puritan, or Quaker.
2. You are allowed to choose an important idea from your concept map or just your larger group, Example "How Puritans survived during early Colonial America." Your teacher will be around to help as well. 3. Look at the Evaluation page before starting so that you know what you'll be graded on. 4. Make a poster that emphasizes the idea you have chosen. It must have an important message or a helpful fact. You are allowed to use programs on the computer or paper and crayons or pencils. Keep in mind that the poster must have an important message or helpful fact. Your poster must also be neat and have little to no spelling errors. Don't be afraid to see what the teacher thinks of your poster when you are beginning it and tell him or her the ideas you have planned. 5. When you are finished your poster bring it over to your teacher so that they are able to see if there is anything you may have forgotten.

Evaluation

  1. Locate the Evaluation form within the Webquest.
2. See if you have met the criteria proposed in the Evaluation form. 3. Then print out the evaluation form and put it in your folder which will be handed in at the end of the Webquest.

Organize and Share Information

  1. Organize all of the papers you have accumulated throughout this Webquest in the folder you made or were provided with in the beginning. This should include your KWL chart, Concept map, Notes from Poster, Notes from all your groups, and your Evaluation form.
2. Once you have completed all the steps you are ready to share with the class what you have learned. 3. You and every other student will sit in a circle and say one thing that you have learned because of the Webquest. This continues until everyone has gone 4. You and your group will then present your poster to the class. After all the groups have presented your posters with teacher will hang them up around the classroom so that the students can learn all the information the students have put on to the poster boards. 5. The last thing that you need to do is turn in your folder with all of your completed work to your teacher.

Conclusion:
 

Upon completing this lesson you will have a better understanding of what colonial living was like for certain groups in the early development of our country. You will be specialized in one area of living style such as a Puritan, Quaker, or Native American's way of life. You will be able to explain their religious values, home life, and problems that they may have faced in the community during the colonial time period.

After completing this assignment you will be able to make a concept map to better orchestrate your ideas, as well as understand how to use the Kidspiration software to put your ideas together in a fun and interactive manner. Kidspiration can be used in multiple ways to a number of projects. How could Kidspirations be used in other areas of the classroom?

Hopefully, the information you have learned will let you better understand how multiple groups of people lived long ago,as well as make you appreciate the luxuries we have in today's time period.
