Using this online activity, the student practices division by finding remainders for a given number and clicking the appropriate numbers in Pascal's triangle to form a colored number pattern. The applet guides the student in finding all possible remainders, starting with zero, and will not allow an incorrect number to be colored. In addition, the applet gives constant feedback on the number of remainders to be found. Students can increase or decrease the number of rows in Pascal's triangle and use the auto coloring function. The program also keeps track of the total number and number of correct selections. From the activity page, What, How, and Why buttons open pages explaining the activity's purpose, function, and where the mathematics fits into the curriculum. The pages also reference the related NCTM standards for grades 6-8. Supplemental resources include a lesson plan, handouts, and exploration questions for further examining number patterns.
