This resource is a manual for instructing a field exercise in ecology, in which students sample winter stonefly communities to explore community structure and dynamics, and to gain experience with the techniques of ordination. This exercise is suitable for general ecology, community ecology, or invertebrate biology courses. The field methodologies could be supplemented by more current ordination techniques, such as computer programs which reduce the protracted calculations and allow more in depth exploration of different ordination techniques.
