This science site contains information about the environmental and academic benefits of composting in schools. Included are: lesson plans with activities and glossaries of terms; a teacher's page which contains the rationale for school composting; lab activities for observing invertebrates, microorganisms, and the composting process; and health considerations. There are suggestions for student research projects, a compost quiz with immediate feedback, and instructions for making a compost bin. The Science and Engineering section has background compost information about invertebrates, microbes, chemistry, and physics and information about getting the right mix for calculating thermophilic composting, moisture content, the carbon and nitrogen ratio, how to monitor the composting process, odor management, and water quality. Information is provided about composting both inside and outside and about weird and unusual composting. A glossary of terms and frequently asked questions can also be found.
