This is a strong lesson on current issues that could be used in all secondary Social Studies courses. Students are asked to stand in different places around a classroom based on whether they agree or disagree with a statement. In addition to the placements described, students could go to an undecided place in the room and see if arguments by other students can convince them to move. There is a list of topics including homelessness, school prayer, and immigration. Teachers could use the structure to discuss the War in Iraq, the presidential election, or any other topic of interest. The lesson could also be used with any historical event that would spark controversy. For example, a discussion about the atomic bomb in WWII would work well in this structure. This lesson could be extended with a follow-up assignment to write an opinion paragraph or to conduct more research on the topic discussed. By participating in this type of lesson regularly, students will gain a better understanding of current events and have opportunities to express their opinions on important issues facing the world.
