In this activity students are given two copies of a customized topographic map. They color in parts of one of the maps according to a key while the other copy of the map is used as a template for cutting pieces of light cardboard that will represent the elevation at various contour levels. Students then glue the cardboard layers in a stack as appropriate, using the colored copy of the map as a guide to placement. As a result of this activity students will learn the significance of topographic contours and learn to use a topographic map to navigate.
