Day 1 of 8, Flip-book style, Frame-by-frame

Goals for today

  • Saving and previewing projects

  • (4:00) Do Now

    Before students arrive, we set up all of the machines with a new, empty Flash project 400 x 400px. The brush tool is selected and the color swatches are prominently placed in the workspace.

    As students enter the Digital Studio, they are guided to a PC and can see instructions on the board: "Use the brush tool to draw a face."

    Students also receive a small survey to fill out with provided pencil.

    If nametags are available, students should use this time to create their nametags.

    (4:10) Saving a project

    Teacher demonstrates saving a new project.

    Choose a descriptive name for your project. "blue_face.fla", for example.

    What is an .fla?

    All of the students save their projects.

    (4:15) Introductions, Icebreaker activity

    Move over to couches. Students bring their surveys.

    Go around the circle sharing names and one or two interesting things from the surveys.

    Discuss some of the details of the course: bringing a USB drive, coming early.

    (4:30) Visit Paul Chan "1st -Light-"

    Watch all of Paul Chan's "1st Light" with pencil and paper for notes + sketches. (14 minutes)

    Encourage everyone to try standing, crouching, sitting. After 5 or 6 minutes, everyone must move to a different place around the projection.

    Leading questions:
    • Is it okay to walk in the projection?
    • What role does color play in this video? How would your experience change with different colors? No color?
    • Which direction is up? Which is down? How do you know?
    • What objects are in silhouettes? Are they all the same size?
    • Is there a story here? More than one story? Does it remind you of any other stories you know?
    Explain the final project in the context of Paul Chan. Constraints:
    • Non-narrative
    • Silhouette

    Pass out flipbooks to check out.
    • What changes from one page to the next?
    • All the books are the same size, same number of pages. Do some appear longer or shorter than others?
    • How slow can you flip a book before it stops looking like a smooth animation?

    (5:00) Animating our faces, frame-by-frame

    Everyone returns to their PCs. The face drawing they made at the beginning of class is still open on their screens.

    Before we start, did anyone figure out anything interesting to share?

    Teacher explains principles of the stage and timeline. Students have Timeline and Keyboard Shortcuts graphic organizers.
    • What is a frame? New frame (f5)
    • What is a keyframe? New keyframe (f6)
    • Navigating timeline. Using , and . to move forward and backward in time.
    Adding a new frame is like adding a page to a flipbook.

    Enable onion-skinning. Set the boundaries of the onion-skin.

    Press ENTER to preview inside of Flash.
    Press CONTROL + ENTER to preview outside of Flash.

    Speed-up or slow-down with frames per second (fps).

    (5:15) Create an animated face

    • Express change in emotion.
    • Use neighbor or teacher or mirror or iSight as a model
    • Employ at least 11 frames of animation

    • All students finishing up and saving work.
    • Teacher collects student work into a Day 1 folder.
