Abstract This paper presents a description of the development of the Student Leadership Program at Como Lake Middle School over the past seven years. It investigates what makes student leadership effective in a Middle School, and considers literature pertaining to guiding principles and practices of effective programs. This paper also considers the effectiveness of using metaphors and reflective journals in teaching student leaders. Finally, considering the research synthesis, and upon reflection of the successes and challenges of the Leadership Program at Como Lake Middle, recommendations for improving the program are made. When I wrote this paper, (found here: http://davidtruss.com/Student-Leadership.html ), I fully intended the appendix, starting on page 54, to be a usable resource by anyone interested in either developing a student leadership program, or teaching student leadership. I hope these resources are useful to you! Please visit me at http://pairadimes.davidtruss.com or contact me at http://pairadimes.davidtruss.com/contact/ Thanks! Reviewer Comments:

This resource is a Masters thesis on how to develop and improve a student leadership program at a middle school level. It is set up with an action research question which is examined, explained and explored. The concepts of student leadership are defined and the author describes his personal experiences including a retreat, activities, stories, reflection journals, visions, modeling, etc. This thorough educational document would be useful to anyone at the mid school level looking at a leadership program.
