COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Lauren Markey, Grace Hussey The curriculum for the Self-Contained English 7 Program exposes students to the general education curriculum. This Self-Contained curriculum addresses the New York State learning standards for English Language Arts. The following units are included in the curriculum: Grammar (usage, mechanics), Composition, Vocabulary, Spelling and Literature (drama, poetry, novels, and short stories). The reading selections presented include high interest, low reading level choices. Students are exposed to literary circles. Students are required to complete a portfolio to increase student partcipation and creativity and to reinforce concepts learned in class. A portfolio outline is presented that includes literary requirements, a rubric/checklist and a timeline.

This huge four unit resource supports New York ELA standards for 7th grade students to read, write, listen and speak for literary response, critical analysis and evaluation and social interaction. Each unit details its big ideas, essential questions, assessment evidence, specific texts, and technology lessons. Support materials (i.e. PPT, Frayer graphic organizers for vocabulary development, Venn diagrams, book review templates, metaphor and simile work, SMART board activities) for the teaching of a variety of novels and short stories are part of this comprehensive unit.
