Description:

Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international education programme for young people between the ages of 13 and 18. It was designed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in close association with Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC). A resource pack for teachers, EHL provides 30 hours of activities that introduce young people to the basic rules of international humanitarian law (IHL). The learning materials, which are based both on historical and contemporary situations, show how IHL aims to protect life and human dignity during armed conflict and reduce and prevent the suffering and destruction that result from war.

Reviewer Comments:

This is a link to the website Exploring Humanitarian Law. The website is an excellent resource for teachers both in terms of curriculum and support materials. The curriculum is available in pdf format and is well-organized with objectives, procedures, and all of the necessary handouts. Along with the lessons, there is a lot of other information that would benefit teachers who are exploring the topics of international humanitarian law. Some of the highlights include a photo gallery with images to supplement the lessons, announcements about upcoming youth workshops and competitions, and suggestions on how to deal with difficult questions that arise throughout the lessons. The materials can be used as a whole or individual lessons can be pulled out and integrated into relevant units.
