This is the last of a three-part E-Example from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics of the NCTM algebra standards that highlights different aspects of students' understanding and use of patterns as they analyze relationships and make predictions. An applet demonstrates ways in which students can begin to create a "unit of units," or a grouping that can be repeated, and help students begin to relate two patterns in a functional relationship. Background information for the teacher is provided.
