Description:

This activity demonstrates how a star who has a known total luminosity can serve as a standard candle. These stars are useful for determining distances. This is because the flux of a star is easy to measure, and knowing flux and luminosity you can work out the distance of the star. The student is then asked to measure the distances to particular stars.
