Reviewer Comments:

This unit begins a beginning algebra course. The unit consists mostly of review of numbers and operations remembered from elementary school. The material on order of operations is well presented and motivated. The material on evaluating expressions is not so well presented. Students are frequently confused on the meaning of variables and here that meaning is obscured. In the section of adding and subtracting negative numbers, there’s also some poor presentation of basic concepts, leading to confusion. The presentation of multiplication is better and well-motivated.
