Description:

This article describes several core number concepts and emphasizes the importance of developing number sense in early grades to set a foundation for future math abilities. A long-term study funded by the National Institute of Health found that failure to acquire basic number system knowledge in first grade significantly impaired a child's ability to develop functional numeracy by 7th grade.
