Reviewer Comments:

This three part resource is about freedom and leadership in Egypt in the Winter of 2011. While parallels are made between Julius Caesar and Hosni Mubarak and a guided Venn diagram is provided, the resources can be used to look at the Egyptian situation alone. Background information is provided for discussion about freedom, elections and leadership. Specific individual stories are cited, personalizing the struggle. The second resource offers the students a news article about detained reporters. In a homework assignment, students are asked to answer questions in the margins while they read the article. These questions encourage the students to interact with text and are literal, inferential and evaluative, reflecting best practice in literacy education. The third resource is a PPT, integral to this entire unit. It looks at freedom and leadership, compares and contrasts dictatorship and democracy, looks at the past and the present, and provides video footage of the protests. If used first, this PPT will provide the necessary background information to make this unit most worthwhile.
