Informal Geometry provides students with the concepts and skills necessary for: finding the perimeter, area, surface area and volume of common geometric figures; graphing equations on the coordinate system and deriving the equation for the third line from a pair of points: using the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems involving right triangles; determining if triangles are similar and finding an unknown side in similar triangles; and determining unknown angles in figures by calculating the sum of the interior angles.

Three dimensional models provide a basis for many interesting math, science, and design experiences. This card modeling unit provides a unique way for students to explore a variety of geometric concepts that reach out from the traditional two dimensional models typically used in instruction. This flexible system allows students to explore area, perimeter, and the properties and concepts of solid geometric shapes. It provides an opportunity to scale and compare the various sizes of planets within our solar system, and to make proportional comparisons of the distances between the planets in the solar system and the distances of objects here on Earth. More About CABOCES Welcome to the Math, Science, and Technology Department (MST) of Cattaraugus Allegany Board of Cooperative Educational Services (CA BOCES). As a department of Instructional Support Services (ISS), we provide Math, Science, and Technology kits along with support services to meet the needs of the individual districts in our area. The BOCES Teaching and Learning Center at Allegany provides hands-on math, science, and technology kits to over twenty area school districts in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. Our department provides forty-three different varieties of kit topics. The kits cover topics in math, life science, physical science, chemistry, and earth science. Each kit contains a teacher's manual, student activity book, materials inventory list, instructional video, and materials needed to complete each learning experience. To familiarize students with basic lab skills, as well as integrate math into science, we begin this unit with two hands on laboratory activities. Students will learn the techniques of massing objects, measuring volume and displacement, and identifying the meniscus of a liquid. The difference between mass and weight is addressed, and demonstrated through the use of differences in gravity on other planets. Finally, students will design an experiment to determine the volume of a paperclip.

Students spend a year in Geometry seeing very little Algebra. Consequently, when they take Algebra II/Trigonometry, much of the Algebra they learned has to be thoroughly reviewed. There are many topics in Geometry that lend themselves to being intergrated with Algebra. We need time to find those topics and to create activities that foster the development of Algebraic skills.

The scope and sequence for Geometry is written for a one year course, culminating with the New York State Geometry Regents Examination. This exam is not a requirement for graduation, but is a requirement for an Advanced Regents Diploma. The scope and sequence is based on the Core Curriculum issued by the New York State Education Department. This Core Curriculum consists of five process strands: Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, and Representation. The content strands of this curriculum include Number Sense and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics and Probability. There are no performance indicators for Number Sense and Operations, Measurement, and Statistics and Probability strands, but they should still be maintained and applied as part of instruction within the other strands.
