Because this is the first lesson plan in the 6th-grade curriculum, this plan is designed to prepare students for Unit 1 as well as for the 6th-grade program. The lesson plan involves students in the preparation of a KWHL chart to prepare them for the study of the Mexican food pyramid. It also suggests reviews of classroom rules in Spanish and of the Spanish alphabet that teachers may choose to use if time permits and the need exists. Included in the Teacher Resources component of the lesson plan is a list of resources for teaching about food and health in Spanish. The list includes websites as well as published materials.

I really like this lesson plan for the first day of class. This lesson is very interactive and engages the students throughout the class. All five activities in the first day are a good way to keep the students involved in the class. Also teaching about a Latin American culture is a good way to keep the class not only learning Spanish but they also learn some background and diversity.
