Critical thinking skills, that lead to acquisition of reliable information leads to a lifestyle that encourages individual, family and community health. This resource contains over 200 pages outlining the Health Education curriculum at Bellmore-Merrick Central High School in New York and embraces the idea that health education “must address not just the physical, but the mental, emotional, spiritual and social components of man as well as the environment in which the person exists.” The introduction gives a clear overview and references the New York State Learning Standards and Key Competencies. The units cover Healthful Lifestyles, Mental/Emotional Health, Sexuality, Substance Abuse Prevention, CPR and First Aid, Nutrition, Healthy Choices and Violence Prevention. Each unit contains detailed unit goals, suggested content and a number of engaging and age-appropriate sample lessons. Many lessons could be adapted for middle school students, and many activities would be appropriate for an advisory program at either level.
