This Java applet enables students to view histograms of given real-world data sets and to generate histograms that reflect data they enter into the applet. Histograms are bar graphs that show frequency information for elements of a data set. Interval width for bars and minimum and maximum frequency of data to display are adjustable parameters for the applet's histograms. The applet automatically displays the number of elements in the data set, the mean and standard deviation, and a frequency chart along with the histogram for each data set. From the applet page, What, How, and Why buttons open pages explaining the activity's purpose, function, and how the mathematics fits into the curriculum. A page also links to the NCTM data analysis and probability standard for grades 6-8. Supplemental resources include additional data sets and sample questions related to bar graphs.
