Description:

The goal of the incubation and embryology kit is to help students observe the mystery of life and learn some of the principles of reproduction. This resource kit provides an opportunity for youth to work with living, growing chick embryos. A secondary, but equally important objective is to provide teachers with an interesting and unique educational tool. Not only is the incubation and embryology kit fun, but it also opens many opportunities for learning.

This collection is available as downloadable PDFs, but portions of the content are found in wiki format (see WIKI Learning Experiences and Resources) which can be edited or built up with other materials on the same topic by members of the Curriki community.

Reviewer Comments:

In this comprehensive six to ten week unit, late elementary students (targeted for grades 5-6) will have hands-on experience in embryology as they incubate, hatch and raise chicks. Humane treatment of organisms is stressed throughout. This resource is provided as part of a kit available in the Cattaraugus and Allegany counties of New York State, USA, and includes correlations with NY state standards, though objectives can easily fit in with other standards as well. Each “kit” in the Curriki repository includes a teacher’s manual and student activity book. The teacher’s manual includes a unit overview, scheduling information, extensive and clear background information materials, preparation instructions, discussion questions, assessments, cross-curricular extension ideas, a glossary and teacher references. Each student manual includes clear, reproducible student handouts and a glossary. The last section in the “kit” is a wiki, and Curriki members are encouraged to add to the existing curriculum. It may take some time initially to order and gather all the necessary supplies, but then these excellent lesson materials can be immediately useful in the classroom.
