Description:

Numerous studies have shown that gifted students can be bored with a teacher-structured curriculum. Gifted students often state that they want to learn more about areas that interest them.  In fact, the ability to focus on an area of interest is a characteristic of a gifted learner. Csikszentmihalyi stated that creative people, “All love what they do. It is not the hope of achieving fame or making money that drives them; rather, it is the opportunity to do the work that they enjoy doing.”  My experience with gifted students has consistently shown they produce better quality and more creative work when they are doing something in which they take pleasure. An independent study provides the framework for students to enhance their creativity and as Csikszentmihalyi claimed, their happiness.
