Learning Experience 6: Triangular Prisms

TEACHER’S GUIDE

Materials:

For each group of three students:

3 Student Activity Sheets for Learning Experience 6 (Please see PDF)

A box filled with: a cube (eg die), a thin rectangular prism (eg domino), a thick rectangular prism (eg wooden block), a small wood cylinder, a large wood cylinder, a small plastic cylinder, a large plastic cylinder, a washer, a marble, a ping pong ball, a cone, a pyramid, a right scalene triangular prism, a right isosceles triangular prism, an isosceles triangular prism, a plastic cube, a spool, and a pecan.

8.5 x 11 white paper

Calculator

Preparation:

Provide models for students of paper folded triangles.

Evaluation Strategy:

Students will use the math ruler and protractor to find accurate measurements of the right, right isosceles, equilateral triangles.

Objective: Students will use the math ruler and protractor to find various measurements of right isosceles triangle, right triangle, and isosceles triangle.

Students should have three different triangles: right triangle, right isosceles triangle, and equilateral triangle. Students are to use the math ruler to find the length of the sides of the triangle labeled as a, b, and c in the diagram. The Pythagorean theorem is then used to calculate c and answers are compared. Students then find the perimeter and area for each triangle. To find the measurement of the angles, students are to follow the directions on the activity sheet for Learning Experience 6 (Please see PDF), which shows how to fold paper to recreate the triangle so the angles of each type of can be measured with the protractors provided. All data is to be recorded on the tables provided on the activity sheets for Learning Experience #6 in the Intermediate Level Measurement Student Activity Book. (Please see PDF)
