Lesson Overview: This is an introductory lesson to the American Civil Rights Movement. This lesson is meant to be used as a means to discuss prior knowledge (including Jim Crow Laws and the doctrine of separate but equal) and to discuss how students may feel about content. Students will watch a video and then examine primary sources from the Jim Crow era. Students will then complete a RAFT writing activity.
Objectives: Students will describe the significance of Jim Crow Laws. Students will complete a writing activity in which he/she reflects on the Jim Crow era.
SC Standards: United States History and The Constitution-8:1: Anaylze the African American Civil Rights Movement, including initial strategies, landmark court cases and legislation, the roles of key civil rights advocates and the media, and the influences of the Civil Rights Movement on other groups seeking equality.
Procedure: Students will watch the video and discuss content with classmates/teacher. Students will then examine two primary sources from the era and discuss content/prior knowledge. Students will then complete the writing activity found below:
