Reviewer Comments:

This lesson plan introduces students to the concept of wikis and is targeted for grades 6 – 10, although the activity could be used successfully younger students as well. Students first create a practice wiki using the instructions and content provided in the lesson. Afterwards, peers will discuss ideas for the creation of their own subject-specific wikis. This basic lesson gives even inexperienced teachers the tools they need to get started with wikis. Before using this lesson, it would be helpful for teachers to assemble a list of existing wikis to show as functioning examples.

I just started using wikis with my 6th & 7th graders last year. I wasn't too worried about not being an "expert" - after my initial (basic) introduction, the kids and I learned together. They were very engaged with the interactivity, and loved commenting on other kid's pages. I had all the kids add a subpage to our main wiki site (rather than maintaining separate accounts) and I subscribed to the site changes. That way, every time changes were saved, it sent me an email that I routed into a separate email folder. I could scroll through the emails and spot-check that kids were not misusing the wiki for flaming, etc.
