This module was designed to help students understand the absorption of energy at the surface of the Earth, how a change in water phase affects surface temperatures, and what controls the temperature of the land surface. As they perform the activities provided, they will use and apply the scientific method, research and explain how energy is absorbed and reflected at the Earth's surface, and investigate the concept of albedo. Students will also explain latent heat, how it is associated with the phase changes of water, and apply this knowledge to determine its role in governing surface temperatures. In addition, they will use Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data to examine climate differences, research the potential impacts a growing town will have on temperature, and why there are differences in summer temperatures for different locations at the same latitude.
