This is a thoughtful lesson that is geared towards a Government or Civics class but could also be used in any Social Studies class that is examining the different types of government. The lesson addresses the balance between the common good and individual needs in a republic. It has clear objectives and provides teachers with key terms, definitions, and structured discussion questions. The lesson has a variety of different strategies to engage students on the topic: they write, work in groups, participate in a discussion, and answer text-based questions. There is a need for a textbook to support the lesson, so it is important that teachers take time to find the appropriate section in their assigned texts.
