This resource is a guide to parents of how to encourage literacy in the home. The ten tips are general and comprehensive. Each key to a literate household is clearly and simply stated. A print out of these keys can be posted on a refrigerator and referred to and expanded upon daily. For example, magazines for children can be subscribed to, checked out from the library or made available on line. Parents can share their own personal reading with children as well as talk about what their children read. Parents can “perform” with children by practicing poems, chants, reader’s theatres, jokes and riddles with their children. A variety of writing materials can be made accessible to children, including stickee notes, thank you notes, grocery lists, even texting opportunities. The resource can be used by teachers to send home to parents or can be part of a school newsletter. The strength of this resource is to provide an important guideline to parents emphasizing how to promote literacy at home.
