Access to the article is free, however registration and sign-in are required. Certain species of Shigella and Yersinia bacteria are serious human pathogens. In a Perspective, Normark and colleagues discuss two exciting studies (West et al., Mota et al.) that shed light on the mechanisms enabling Shigella and Yersinia to invade host target cells. The new work may pave the way to designing new therapeutics to block invasion of host cells by these human pathogens.
