Introduction: An educator would have to be familiar with the kindergarten mathematics curriculum and the basic principles of measurement that we teach children in kindergarten. This includes vocabulary such as inch and foot, as well as knowledge about how to use a basic 12 inch ruler.
Group Size: Whole class, small group, individual practice Learning Objectives: Students will listen attentively to the story. “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” Students will work cooperatively to measure objects using an inchworm ruler and a standard 12-inch ruler. Students will correctly measure objects by lining up their ruler correctly and counting the inches. Guiding Questions: What are the different ways we can measure things in our classroom and measure ourselves? How can we use a ruler to measure objects around our classroom? Materials: The story, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” Fish picture cardsInchworm rulersChart PaperMeasurement recording sheetPencils Unifix cubes as neededProcedures: Students will have previously heard the story, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss.We will briefly discuss the story and then children will be given fish picture cards to observe.We will meet on the carpet and I will begin by asking the children to show me with their fingers what they think an inch is.They will then be introduced to the inchworm ruler.I will explain that each section of the ruler is one inch.The boys and girls will have an opportunity to come up with some things that we could measure in inches.I will then demonstrate how to line up the ruler with various objects (starting at 1 and lining up the edge).Students will come up to the chart and model how to measure different pictures using the ruler.Students will then work with a partner to measure various objects on their tables using the rulers.They will write their measurements on a recording sheet.While students are measuring I will call pairs up to measure each other’s height (which I will model for them before they do their work at their seats.I will also show them the symbol used for inches).They will come to the graph with a worm nametag and will measure each other to find out how many inches tall we all are.They will then be given a certificate to fill out with their name and how tall they are.Students who finish measuring will complete a matching practice sheet (matching correct measurements) and a measurement fill in practice. Extension:For our Workboard writing center, students will finish the sentence, “If I was one inch…” and for Math center they will measure a set of different objects and record their answers on a worksheet.Modifications: If there are students who I observe having difficulty using the ruler, they will be asked to use unifix cubes to measure instead, until they are comfortable using a ruler.For students who need to be challenged, once they complete their worksheet, I will introduce an actual ruler to them and have them use it to measure the items and other items around the classroom.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to correctly measure objects using a ruler.We will also look at our height graph and discuss such questions as; who is the tallest, are any students the same height, and if a different grade did this activity would their graph would look the same? USING THE RUBRIC BELOW..... I will have the children circle the box that best describes how they worked throughout this lesson. We will go through it as a class, and I will read everything on the rubric to them, and allow them to judge their own behavior.

MEASURING WITH THE RULER
I had a lot of trouble lining up my ruler without help, and I still do not understand how to do it!
I lined up the ruler most of the time, but some of my answers were wrong and I'm still having a little bit of trouble.
I lined up my ruler all by myself and measured all of the objects correctly. I did not need any help from my teacher or my friends.

I had trouble the entire time sharing the materials with the friends at my table.
