Description:

In this activity, students create data of a certain characteristic and use slider bars to set the data. Then the applet calculates the sum, range, mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation for the data set. Slider bars are used so that the effect of changing the data can be immediately recognized. This activity allows students to explore the different statistical measures and how changing the data affects measures of central tendency and spread. This activity includes supplemental materials, including background information about the topics covered, a description of how to use the application, and exploration questions for use with the java applet.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.1: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.2: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.3: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
