Reviewer Comments:

This resource is intended for a two-day high school lesson on microbiology and its importance for students. On day 1, they will grow bacteria from samples taken “on and around” them. One the second day, they will discuss hygienic practices as a way to protect themselves from pathogenic bacteria. While the main idea is present, a significant amount of development will be necessary to make this a full lesson ready for implementation in the classroom. It would be helpful to include the actual URLs for the referenced video clips, as well as attachments with the mentioned PowerPoint presentation and assessment worksheet. As written, it would be up to the individual teacher to develop much of the safety considerations, procedures (for both Day 1 and 2), and assessment in order to effectively use this lesson.

This lesson plan gives an important lesson in what bacteria is and how it affects others. The incorporation of videos and other visual software can make students understand more, and what can be done to prevent the spread of the bacteria. I also think the lesson plan gives a in depth idea of how bacteria affects the body and how a person should prioritize personal Hygiene. The instructions are clear and even gives a subtle hint about making sure students do not open their BHI plates.

I would recommend adding some content that focuses on beneficial bacteria as well as pathogenic bacteria on the body. Often students are taught to demonize microorganisms, even though we couldn't exist without them!
