Description:

Students will write bills that relate to citizen rights and responsibilities as they pertain to , but aren't limited by, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They will work in committees as a Senator (who they will also research) to clarify/defend their bills, and then present them to class for a vote. Along with the bill, the students will also hand in a journal they maintain through the process.

This is a great activity to help students learn about how a bill becomes a law. The lesson provides teachers with a detailed overview of a mock congress simulation. There are recommendations for what to do each day and examples of some of the important resources needed for the lesson. It would be helpful to create specific handouts for the students that include directions and clear requirements for the activity.
