In this comprehensive 20 day unit, high school students will study DNA replication, translation and transcription. Ultimately, students will be able to analyze how changes in DNA result in gene mutations and evaluate the effects of these mutations on the cell and the organism. The unit is presented in an Excel file with separate tabs for the unit overview and each subsequent lesson. Each lesson has an estimated timeline, clear lesson objectives, suggested assessments, aligned standards and materials needed, in addition to summaries of all learning tasks and procedures. There is also space for notes regarding enrichment and accommodations, as well as anticipated problems. The lesson summaries are quite brief and teachers would need to decide the content and procedures of many of the included activities. Answer keys and specific procedures would be helpful to teachers unfamiliar with the content. It would also be helpful if the referenced PowerPoint presentation, teacher test and other articles were included in the collection. Overall, this unit is outstanding in its level of detail, scope and variety of learning tasks.
