This web site contains descriptions and links to more than 60 virtual manipulatives, activities designed to function as concept tutorials. The virtual manipulatives, mostly in the form of Java applets, are designed to facilitate grades 6-8 mathematics learning. By encouraging active student exploration with computers, the virtual manipulatives can help students visualize mathematical relationships. They are organized into five categories based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards: number and operations; algebra; geometry; measurement; and data analysis and probability. For this 6-8 grade range, manipulatives focus on developing concepts with activities such as factoring numbers using a tree diagram, exploring functions with an interactive function machine, and working with the Platonic solids. Student activities and lesson plans accompany many of the virtual manipulatives, each of which is linked to an explanation of the relevant NCTM Standards.
