Description:

This Earth science resource shows students examples of the stages of atoll development. Six satellite images depict how a reef is formed, and then a lagoon. Finally, the island sinks beneath the sea. Students are instructed to click on each image to enlarge it and read additional information. They can mouse over the enlarged images to elicit color coding that indicates the locations of the reef, lagoon, and island. Latitude and longitude are also included. Clicking on a Where on Earth? button shows the locations of the islands in the Pacific Ocean. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
